5 Things to Check Before You Buy a Second-Hand Car in Uganda

uying a second-hand car in Uganda can be a great investment — or a very expensive mistake. The difference often comes down to what you check (or don’t check) before handing over your money. Here are five things every buyer must do.

1. Verify the Logbook and Ownership

The logbook is the most important document for any vehicle in Uganda. Always confirm that the name on the logbook matches the person selling you the car. Request to see the original document, not a photocopy. You can also verify ownership details through the Uganda Revenue Authority portal.

If the seller is reluctant to share the logbook or gives you unclear answers about ownership, walk away.

2. Check the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)

The VIN is a unique 17-character code that identifies every vehicle. Check that the VIN on the logbook matches the VIN stamped on the chassis and dashboard of the vehicle. Any mismatch could mean the car is stolen or has been in a serious accident with frame replacement.

3. Inspect for Accident History and Repairs

Look carefully at the paintwork for mismatched panels or uneven colour, which can indicate previous accident damage. Check door alignment, boot closure, and bonnet fit. Take the car to a trusted mechanic for a full inspection — a small cost now can save you millions later.

4. Test Drive in Multiple Conditions

A test drive around the block is not enough. Test the vehicle in traffic, on a rough road, and at higher speeds where safe. Listen for unusual engine sounds, check how the brakes respond, test the air conditioning, and ensure all electronics work correctly.

5. Confirm the Car is Not Under Finance or Caveat

Some vehicles for sale in Uganda still have outstanding bank loans or legal caveats attached to them. If you purchase such a vehicle, you may inherit the seller’s debt or face legal complications. Ask for proof that the vehicle is free and clear of any financial obligations.

At Driven Deals Ltd, every vehicle we import goes through a thorough inspection process before it reaches you. We handle all documentation to ensure clean, dispute-free ownership transfers.
