Logbook Transfer in Uganda: A Simple Guide to Transferring Vehicle Ownership

Transferring a vehicle logbook is one of those processes that seems simple but trips up a surprising number of buyers and sellers in Uganda. Doing it incorrectly — or failing to do it at all — can lead to serious legal and financial complications down the line.

Here’s everything you need to know.

Why Logbook Transfers Matter

The logbook (officially the Vehicle Registration Certificate) is the legal document that establishes ownership of a vehicle in Uganda. When you buy a car, the logbook must be transferred into your name. Until that transfer is complete, the vehicle is legally still owned by the previous holder.

This matters because if the previous owner has unpaid fines, tax obligations, or legal issues tied to that vehicle, you could find yourself entangled in problems that aren’t yours — simply because the logbook was never updated.

Documents Required for a Logbook Transfer

To complete a logbook transfer in Uganda, you will typically need:

  • The original vehicle logbook
  • A sale agreement signed by both buyer and seller
  • National IDs of both the buyer and seller
  • Completed transfer forms from URA
  • Payment of the applicable transfer fee

The Process

  1. Both the buyer and seller visit a URA office or use the URA online portal to initiate the transfer
  2. Submit all required documents
  3. Pay the transfer fee
  4. URA processes the transfer and updates the vehicle register
  5. A new logbook is issued in the buyer’s name

Processing times can vary, but with all documents in order, the process can be completed within a few working days.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Buying a vehicle without completing the transfer — Some buyers delay the transfer or never complete it. This is risky and should be avoided entirely.

Accepting a photocopy of the logbook — Always insist on the original. A seller who can only provide a copy should be treated with caution.

Not verifying the seller’s identity against the logbook — Confirm that the person selling the vehicle is the registered owner.
